Firefighters prepare for large Washington state blazes to merge, with lightning storm to come

A lightning storm is forcasted to hit Washington state Saturday, causing even more fires in the region without any sign of rain. The wildfires have been going on for weeks and state health officials have distributed more than 20,000 respirator masks. Buildings have been protected, but people have been urged to evacuate and a highway has been closed.

Final tests under way on Wyoming supercomputer to be used in weather research projects

The National Center for Atmospheric Research supercomputer is in its final stages of being tested before it begins to be used for climate modeling. One of the first projects that this supercomputer will be used for is modeling air movement inside hurricaines and tornadoes. This supercomputer is 30 times more powerful than the machine that is being used now.

Pittsburgh, county settle suit over death of man who tried to get ambulance in 2010 blizzard
Pittsburgh and Allegheny County are settling a lawsuit that involves the family of a man who died during the 2010 blizzard after calling 911 10 times over the course of 30 hours. It is reported that medics could not reach the man and therefore asked him to walk to them through the storm. The trail will go to Common Pleas Court Friday.

Al Qaeda branch in North Africa calls for attacks on US diplomats

The Al Qaeda branch in North Africa is protesting and calling for attacks on U.S. diplomats because of the anti-Islam video. The killing of Christopher Stevens was praised and other attacks were threatened by this Al Qaeda group. This anti-Islamic video has triggered uprisings and more calls for attacks on not only U.S. facilities, but also on other areas of Africa.

French court orders magazine to hand over topless Kate Middleton photos



A French court ruled Tuesday that a magazine publisher turn in all the photos of a topless Kate Middleton that were taken during her vacation in southern France. If the French magazine does not hand in the digital copies, they will be daily fined 10,000 euros ($13,100). The magazine already published 14 photos last Friday.

Conn.'s McMahon claims Murphy violated House ethics rule, in tight Senate race

Linda McMahon, the Republican running for the open seat in the Senate, filed an ethics complaint against Connecticut Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy. Murphy, who in 2007 was sued for not paying his mortgage, is being accused by McMahon for accepting a mortgage deal which is against House rules. The Murphy campaign says that this accusation is a low political move. 


'Today' interviews Kris Jenner instead of airing moment of silence for victims of 9/11 terrorist attacks 

The 'Today Show' did not have a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. because an interview with Kris Jenner was being aired instead. The five-minute interview contained questions about "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and about Jenner's breast implants. The network has answered the criticisms surrounding this by saying that 9/11 coverage was sufficiently aired over the course of the morning.

Chilling 9/11 note reaches family 10 years later

A note that says "84th Floor west office 12 people trapped" was found after the 9/11 attacks and made its way to the family of the man who wrote this note 10 years later. The family, who was hoping that their father and husband had an instant death, was devastated to learn that he was trapped in his office near the towers before his death. The paper will be an exhibit in the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

Rescue workers devastated to find body of boy drowned in lake

The search for a 6-year-old boy ended Sunday when rescue workers found his body in Smith Mountain Lake. The boy, who could not swim, was last seen standing on the edge of a dock without a life vest. The search lasted more than three hours and included people searching on land and in the water before divers found the body.

Forums set to discuss young adults and drunk driving

There will be two community forums in Lynchburg this month to inform the public of a new campaign against drunk driving among young adults. Between 2006 and 2008, there were 115 car accidents in Lynchburg as a result of drunk drivers. This new campaign hopes to decrease this number by 10 percent, but the details are still being discussed.

Churches Seeking Funds for Special Needs Home

The United Methodist Church network is unable to pay off their bills for one of their Heart Havens home. This network has been building homes all over Virginia for people with mental and physical disabilities. The community has not been giving as much to this network and as a result the projects have been slowing down.
